Hello, I'm Sean Curran and this is yesterday in Parliament from BBC Radio 4.

On Thursday the 4th of September, senior members of the government rallied round Angela Rainer

after she admitted she hadn't paid enough stamp duty on a new home

and referred herself to the

independent advisor on ministerial interests. In the Commons, one Cabinet minister suggested the

Conservatives were criticising the Deputy Prime Minister because she was a huge asset to the

government. The House of Commons Chamber, with its rows of green benches

facing each other and red lines on the carpet, is designed to reflect and perhaps encourage

the adversarial nature of the UK's political system. And politics is at its most personal

when reputations and careers are on the line.

When Angela Rainer arrived to take her place for Prime Minister's questions on Wednesday,

her Cabinet colleague Lucy Powell was quick to offer a supportive hug.

24 hours later, facing her own question time,

and with the Deputy Prime Minister's political future in the balance,

the leader of the Commons put a rhetorical arm around the Housing Secretary.

They have a go at her because she's so bloody good at her job.

On the opposite side of the Commons, the Conservative shadow leader of the House, Jessie Norman,

sounded almost sympathetic.

I like and I rather admire the Deputy Prime Minister, Madam Deputy Speaker, uniquely amongst the government.

At least she has a policy of trying to reduce taxes.

But he went on to accuse Angela Rainer of trying to reduce tax by dodging it.

Does she believe Cabinet Ministers, let alone the Deputy Prime Minister of this country,
