If you are like most people, you take your dog for a walk for exercise or for a potty break. Surprisingly, one of the questions I get asked frequently is when and how I walk my dogs. There are five main reasons I walk my dogs, and the walking is always intentional. Those reasons are for elimination (toilet breaks), relationship building, to give my dogs a chance to sniff (read the pee mail), exercise, and sometimes to socialize.

In the episode you'll hear:

• The types of walks I take with my dogs.
• How I walk my dogs, and when I choose off-leash or on a leash.
• About Tater's LOVE of people and what that means when walking him.
• The reasons I am cautious and intentional when walking in new places.
• Why I am always on alert when walking my dogs on leash in a city.
• What I do to keep my dogs safe when walking in new places.
• When and why I use a head halter, a harness or a flat collar.
• About how I start when walking the dogs at home.
• The games I play on walks with my puppy for relationship building.
• About letting dogs scent on walks and sniffing to read the pee mail.
• What I do when my dogs don't come when called.
• How Tater, Momentum and This! love to use their noses.
• What I do to be intentional about my dogs sniffing on walks.

If you're like most people, you take your dog for a walk for one of two reasons.

0:15.9

Either to get them a little exercise or to get them to eliminate a pee or poop so that you

can go about your business.

0:27.4

Now, that's pretty common.

But when I take my dog for a walk, yeah, those may be two of the reasons, but there's

0:33.6

another few that are very important and that's what I'd like to share with

0:37.6

you today. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. You'd be surprised the number

0:44.1

of people who leave comments asking, Susan, please share how you go about walking your dog,

particularly on YouTube. And if you are watching this on YouTube,

1:01.0

you think would be really, really, really interesting to you. Okay, maybe even if it's just one

1:07.0

really interesting to you. Go ahead and hit that light button. Now, everything that I do with

1:11.3

my dogs are, is intentional. And I'm going to just spoiler alert. I'm going to give you

1:17.6

five reasons why I am intentionally walking my dog. Now, the obvious, it's elimination,

1:25.2

it's relationship building because everything you're doing with your dog is

1:30.4

either tearing down or building that relationship.

1:34.5

You know, relationships with our dogs are just like relationships with people that were either

1:39.4

withdrawing on that bank account or we're adding to that bank account, you can't have an interaction

1:46.6

with that other person and it be even. It's you're building or you're withdrawing. And this very

1:53.4

same thing is true of our relationship with our dogs. And so I want to be intentional and make

1:57.4

sure that I'm depositing into that. So, I digress. Those five things.

2:01.9

Really, there's four, but sometimes there's a fifth and I'm going to share it with you.
