Yeltsin grows up.

Last time we followed the somewhat traumatic early years of Boris Yeltsin's life.

While harsh and tough, it was a typical upbringing during the reign of Joseph Stalin.

By 1949, Yelson was enrolled in the Ural Polytechnic Institute,

also known as the UPI in Sverdlovsk. Clinic

This was the city that would provide residents for Boris for the better part of 36 years.

It was also where Zarr Nicholas II and his family were murdered in 1918.

When Stalin took over, he set his sights on making Svidlofsk a primary industrial hub.

Its importance to the general industrialization of the Soviet Union cannot be easily overstated.

When the Germans invaded the USSR, the region became the home of many of the factories that were forced to head east ahead of the Nazi

wave.

When Yeltsin arrived in 1949, the town was writing the crest of a population boom, going from 150,000 people in 1929 to 600,000 in 1949.

The UPI was one of the top schools outside of the ones in Moscow or Leningrad.

While his monthly stipend was meager, life in Spridlovsk was good to Boris.
