Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and its chief lobbying organization, CASEL (the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) emerged in the mid-1990s from a place called the Fetzer Institute. What is the Fetzer Institute, though? Created by a twentieth century radio magnate named John Fetzer, the Institute was devoted to Fetzer's devoted pursuit of New Age Spiritualism and occultism. The inspiration for much of his theosophical belief resided in the curious character of Alice A. Bailey, who wrote two dozen books on occultism and theosophy, including Education in the New Age, between 1922 and her death in 1949. Did these occult ideas influence the development of Social-Emotional Learning? 0:37.4	emotional learning. So we're going to have I think this one's going to be like all of the SEL ones
0:43.3	fairly long. So let's just kind of jump into it. I guess I should spend a minute, a minute,
0:53.8	summarizing what social emotional learning is for the people who are not keeping up with the
0:59.1	infinite amount of information you have to know to understand why anything I'm talking about
1:03.2	matters. But social emotional learning is an extraordinarily widespread program. In fact,
1:10.2	it is probably a completely ingrained program throughout education now. It is retooled the
1:17.7	objective of creating academic mastery or competence and replaced it with the objective of
1:24.7	doing, creating social and emotional competence, things like relationship management,
1:31.2	self awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making. You can just hear these kind of core
1:37.9	competency areas from the organization Castle, which is the collaborative for academic
1:44.0	social and emotional learning, which kind of heads up for the moment. It's kind of heads up
1:48.7	social emotional learning advocacy and implementation in the United States right now with billions upon
1:56.2	billions in federal money coming into it and it being in virtually every school system in America.
2:01.0	Let's not understate the scope of this problem. And you can virtually hear how every one of those
2:07.5	competency areas is just a entry point for wokeness. Social awareness, what you're going to talk
2:13.9	about, what it means to be socially aware of structural power, systemic power, critical race theory,
2:19.1	queer theory, gender ideology, it's all coming in. Self awareness, whoops, same thing. How have
2:24.2	you contributed to racism? What does it mean to be a boy? What does it mean to be a girl?
2:29.8	Are you, what's your sexuality? How do you feel about that blah, blah, blah? Whole thing,
2:33.7	responsible decision making, how do you challenge systems of power? This is actually literally what
