Well, there's no regular show this week because Matt is still in Europe and we wanted to wait for him to get back before resuming our regular schedule.

But I did want to share with you a sarcastic rebuttal to the six pieces of

woodworking wisdom I hear most often, that happen to be utter BS.

First up, if it looks square, it is square, unless it's not square.

In which case, it's not square.

Look, I understand where this one is going.

In other words, don't stress about things that your eye can't even see.

That's good advice.

But most people can't tell the difference between an 89.5 degree angle

and a 90 degree angle.

What if you make a picture frame, and you try to assemble

four 89.5 degree angles.

Suddenly you can see that error.

So maybe we change it to if it looks square it should be okay unless it joins up to

other pieces that potentially compound the error.

Measure twice, cut once.

But what if you have the wrong measurement in the first place?

So maybe it should be double-check the required size, measure twice, then cut.

Or better yet, stop measuring and make the part fit into your project using relative dimensioning,

baby.

A poor craftsman blames his tools, as do great craftsman and mediocre craftsman.
