We are your weekly guide to the numbers all around us in the news and in life,

and I'm Tim Harford. In a huge upheaval, India is demonetizing. The government has given people just 50 days to convert their 501,000 rupee notes

into new legal tender before they're declared worthless.

That's a big deal. These notes, worth about $7.50 and $15 respectively, represent more

than 85% of the value of cash in circulation. In a country where most transactions are cash transactions

and many people don't have bank accounts. And changing them into new notes

means queuing up at a bank and changing just 4,000 rupees at a time or $60. If you've got a lot of cash, it's

a huge hassle, but that's part of the point. The Prime Minister Norendra Modi says that this is all about cracking down on corruption and tax evasion.

Still, there were protests on the streets of major cities.

The decision seemed like a deeply unpopular move. Thousands of people have gathered here in Central Kolkata

to protest against the Prime Minister's demonitisation plans.

But to calm the opposition, Prime Minister Modi wanted to demonstrate what the people of India thought.

The debate on demonization continuing in Parliament, Prime Minister Modi has now reached out to the people asking them to give out their

views on the government's move on the Narengra- Modi app.

As reported on the Indian TV channel Times Now, he asked people to fill in a survey on his online app,

and a few days later, he had an answer.
