Garuda Indonesia Flight 152, an Airbus A300 carrying 234 people, is on approach to

Palonia International Airport in Madan Indonesia after a flight from

Sokarno Hada International Airport in Jakarta Indonesia.

Forest fires in Riau, South Sumatra, and Kalamantan have sent smoke covering the

skies across all of Southeast Asia, limiting visibility to less than 500 meters.

The flight crew of Garuda Indonesia Flight 152 has to rely on air traffic control

and their instruments to guide them through their approach.

With only one runway and another aircraft departing, air traffic control has to

slow flight 152 to clear the way for their landing.

Madan approach is attempted to guide Flight 152 by advising them based on local radar

vectoring guidance. While being vectored in the smoke, the pilots realize with horror

they're flying straight into tree tops on a mountain. They attempt to add power and

climb but it is too late. The plane slams into the mountainside and all 234 occupants

lose their lives and will become the deadliest aviation disaster in Indonesia's

history up to this point. Why did Garuda Indonesia Flight 152 collide with terrain
