Wrore up the only black person in San Francisco, I'm Arianna Prail. Writer and cultural critic Rebecca Carroll grew up the only black person in a small rural New England town.

Adopted by white parents when she was a baby, Carol never met another black person in real life until she was six years old.

Her new memoir, Surviving the White Gays, recounts episodes from her childhood and adolescence in which

the people who love her most fail to see her for who she is, and how she overcame the feelings

of isolation to forge her own identity as a black woman. We'll talk with Rebecca Carroll about her
