We all have people in our lives that we say we'd do anything for.

Maybe it's a best friend or a partner or family member, but whatever they are to us, we'd go to great lengths for them.

It's obviously easy to say yes to those questions.

But what if it was something more difficult?

What if it was life or death?

Around 3 o'clock on the afternoon of August 4th, 1999, best friends David and Raffey pulled

up to the Carlsbad Caverns National Park Visitor Center. They were on the last few legs of a

cross-country trip from Boston to California, which was as much about fun as it was function.

David was starting graduate school at UC Santa Barbara in a few weeks, and Rafi was tagging along

for the ride, so they decided that instead of taking a direct route and trying to get to

California as quickly as possible, they would party their way across the country and map out a

route that would take them through the cities that have a wild reputation. So far, they'd already

been through New Orleans, Nashville, and

Austin, and each night when they were done soaking up the local culture, they slept it off

at a nearby campground. The national park they were at didn't have the good time reputation

of their other stops, but options were sort of limited in New Mexico, and they figured a night

off in the party scene would probably do them good anyway. When they got there, the ranger at the info-desk inside the visitor center unfolded a map of the park's 33,000 acres and pointed
