with me Chris Smith and with Sally La Page. This week as COVID cases take off

again in Europe we review the situation here in the UK. Also making strawberry smells with

mushrooms and breakthrough textiles that cool you down when the sun shines on

them. Plus as we strive for a more sustainable future we're asking, would would be good to help us build

everything from better buildings to knives and even biodegradable glitter?

The Naked Scientists Podcast is powered by UKfast.co.uk. But first, COVID cases across the European continent are surging to the extent that some countries are resorting again to drastic

measures to control outbreaks. The Netherlands has imposed new lockdown

restrictions. In Ireland curfews on pubs, clubs and restaurants have been reintroduced, and in Austria,

COVID vaccines will be made mandatory.

So how are we fairing here in the UK?

And should we be following suit, or should we hold our nerve.

David Matthews is a virologist at the University of Bristol and he's in the latter camp.

Currently I think we're in a good place. I'm very optimistic. We have a highly vaccinated population.

Couple with that we've had quite a lot of spread which acts as a boost to people who are vaccinated.
