Secretary Philip Hammond is there this week amid what seemed like a coordinated

series of warnings about the impact of a yes vote on the UK's defense capabilities.

This included an intervention from a serving officer Admiral Sir George Zambellus on the weakening of the Navy.

And as expected, the campaigners for independence have replied by accusing unionists of scare tactics.

Are these scare tactics, or are these warnings essentially true?

And even if they are, might they not be counterproductive?

It's very hard to judge.

With Greece returning to international bond markets for the to moment seems to have peaked, deficits are at reasonable levels and investors are even keen to buy new shares and Spanish and Greek banks.

But Europe now faces the danger it could let up on reform needed to provide long-term prosperity. Do Europeans have the stomach for it?
