Whether it's food, medicine, or household necessity,

it is generally expected that whatever you're purchasing will be safe

when used for its intended purpose.

If it's out on the market, the people selling it should have all their bases covered, right?

Unfortunately, this isn't always the case.

It may be the stuff of jokes and memes now, but in 1978, the poor design of the Ford Pinto was no laughing matter.

The positioning of the fuel tank caused concerns that a rear-end collision may result in an

explosion. This forced the car company to recall over one and a half million of these automobiles.

This has led some critics to label the Ford Pinto, the worst car of all time.

In the following years, Ford hasn't exactly been able to maintain a sterling reputation.

Ford had to recall over 20 million cars in 1981 due to faulty brakes, resulting in nearly 100

deaths, and subsequently announced a voluntary recall in

1996 for defective ignitions. It was found that the ignition switches could cause steering

column fires even when the automobile wasn't running. Yikes. Imagine finding that in your parking

space. Cars are not the only thing to explode out of nowhere.

How about some smartphone disasters?

In August of 2016, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone was the hot new electronic on the market, quite literally.

By October of the same year, Samsung had permanently discontinued the device.
