This is Bird Note.

Tropical rainforests are stunning places.

They support half of the world's biodiversity.

They're found in just a few regions, such as the Amazon, the Congo River Basin in Africa

and Indonesia.

The variety of life forms stands out visually, from the rainbow feathers of the Scarlet

Macaw to the fantastic iridescence of the birds of paradise.

And there's diversity in sound, too, from the wide-ranging whistles of the screaming

piha to the otherworldly melodies of the musician-ren.

The relationship between people and rainforests runs deep.

Indigenous communities continue to steward large areas of rainforests, and these ecosystems

store roughly 40% of the world's carbon, keeping it out of the atmosphere where it would contribute

to climate change.

So keeping rainforests healthy means keeping people safe, too.

Today is World Rainforest Day, which recognizes the importance of safeguarding rainforests

for future generations.
