Summary
Daniel Negreanu, one of poker's all-time greats reveals the psychology of high-stakes decision making.
Daniel has been playing professional poker for 30 years and has earned over $50 million at the tables. A Hall of Famer and seven-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, he's widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the game's history. Known for his engaging table presence and ability to read opponents, Daniel has remained at poker's elite level across multiple generations of players.
In this conversation at his Lake Las Vegas home, Daniel breaks down the art of making decisions under pressure, the importance of self-awareness when your edge is slipping, and why humility trumps ego at the highest levels. He explains how he uses conversation to disarm opponents, why he'd rather be a "laughing hyena" than an intimidating presence like Phil Ivey or Tiger Woods, and the physical and mental preparation required to survive seven gruelling weeks at the World Series of Poker.
Daniel also reflects on his worst year on record in 2023, the advice he'd give his teenage self, and why quality now matters more than quantity. Whether you're interested in poker or just the mindset required to stay at the top of your game for three decades, this episode is packed with insights on adaptability, goal-setting, and trusting yourself when everything else fails.

| 0:00.0 | I find that whenever I'm doubted, you know, it brings out the best in me. Some people crumble under pressure or, you know, criticism. I'm the opposite. I like it. I'm like, okay, bring it on. You know, I kind of enjoy that. It motivates me to just be a better version of myself, you know, especially if there's any points in my career. I'm like, you know what? They're |
| 0:21.0 | kind of right. I need to work harder. I need to be better. So I look at mistakes. I'm excited about |
| 0:26.4 | mistakes because mistakes are an opportunity. That is the voice of Daniel Negrana, one of the greatest |
| 0:35.7 | poker players who's ever lived. |
| 0:42.4 | We travelled to his home in late Las Vegas, just outside of Sin City itself, |

| 0:51.9 | Think about it, poker doesn't demand physical gifts or privileged connections. |
| 0:53.5 | Age is no barrier. If you can master that unique blend of skill |
| 0:56.3 | and look, you can compete at the highest level. Daniel's done precisely that, is a Hall of |
| 1:03.1 | Famer with career earnings exceeding a phenomenal $50 million at the tables. But what fascinated |
| 1:09.4 | us wasn't his success. |
| 1:15.5 | It was how he sustained it across decades in a game that's constantly evolving, |
| 1:18.2 | where one wrong read can cost you everything. |
| 1:23.5 | In this conversation, we're going to explore the psychology of high-stakes decision making, |

| 1:31.3 | This is Daniel Negroon on High Performance. |
| 1:39.3 | Daniel, thank you for being here on High Performance. |
| 1:42.8 | What is high performance to you? |
| 1:45.3 | Well, for me, high performance is sort of hacking what works best for you to, you know, |
| 1:50.7 | perform it whatever it is you do at the highest level, right? And so for me, with poker, |
| 1:55.0 | that requires sleep first and foremost, you know, sleep, which allows for focus, you know, intensity and all those things that encompass what it means to be at your best. For people watching this that maybe are not familiar with the game of poker, how much of it is skill and how much of it is luck? Let's say you and I, we played one poker hand, right? Well, it's 50-50, right? It's going to be you or me. |
| 2:17.6 | Well, now if we play 10, it's going to be me a little more than you. If we play a thousand, it's going to be me mostly. If we play 5 million, it's never going to be you, right? So it's all about sample size. Luck in the short term plays a very significant role. But in the long run, the standard deviation eventually gets to a place where, you know, it evens out. |
