The New Beverly Cinema presents the Pure Cinema Podcast. My name is Brian Sauer, and I'm joined by

0:15.8

the one and only.

Oh, where it came. Yes, sir. So we're doing another sampler today. These are fun. And can you, I can't remember what inspired this one. Do you remember? Well, we're calling this one the world crime sampler. I think there's something about when we do our deep dive episodes, like we did this whole month on Lynch, right? After we finish things like that, it is nice to, like, just jump around

0:37.8

versus a deep dive into any topic. And with crime movies, we've touched on, we did a crime

0:42.5

episode. We did it, well, we did a neo-noir episode with noir. We, you know, we've touched on

0:47.1

these topics, but I actually do remember. No, it all comes to me right now. It's ironic because

0:52.0

I didn't pick any of them, which is hilarious.

1:00.9

I had ordered a ton of French crime films from one of the sales, and then, and I was like,

1:05.4

I need an excuse to watch them, but then for some reason I thought, well, there's great crime films from all around the world.

1:10.9

I always think of, you know, the two that I always think of shadowy kind of Melville stuff, and then I think of like Curisawa's crime films, you know, just in terms of quick that pops into my head. Of course, I didn't

1:15.7

pick any of the ones I set out to watch, which is hilarious, but it's okay because I watched

1:20.5

some freaking amazing movies. But I love just touch points on like, you know, looking at also how

1:25.8

crime movies are different in different countries, how broad the word crime is, you know, whether that could be in a cops and robbers film, a heist film, a killer film, a stalker. I mean, it can literally mean anything you want to justify it as. So I feel when we do those, maybe we come with some more random stuff to the table, which I like.

1:42.7

Well, yeah, and we're going to get even more random because we have not one but two wildcard,

1:47.1

two mystery slots in this sampler.

1:49.3

Yeah, I think for this one, we decided on three key spots, three countries that I think

1:54.0

are all pretty well known for crime movies, being Japan, England slash UK, and France.

2:02.9

So those were three spots. We're like, well, let's pick a film from each of those and then two categories where we could pick two different countries

2:07.0

from anywhere. So I think that will be a lot of fun to see where we both end up. One of mine, I think,

2:11.4

will be pretty obvious for me. But, you know, it was really fun to jump around. And this is one

2:17.2

I'm already ready to just do a part two of and just find five more countries because, you know, it was really fun to jump around. And this is one I'm already ready to just do a part two of and just find five more countries.

2:21.1

Because, you know, there are so many different types of movies from different eras, too.
