Summary

Today we have Colton Broadbent, one of our favorite architectural designers with whom we’ve done quite a bit of work lately. We talk about the importance of the architect and what role they play in the whole design process where the architect is like the surgeon. We talk about what to look for in an architect, such as someone who will provide share-ables to you, and then look for someone that you get along with because often you’re going to be working with your architect for a couple of years. Colton tells us what goes into working with unique terrain such as putting a home on a mountain side, or working with a river that runs through a property. We emphasize the importance of putting together a team that you get along with from the beginning to have the right flow in order to get optimal results. We also go over how to talk about and bring up budgets with the client and the best ways to work a budget into a project. What to look for in an architect 3:47 Working with unique terrain 15:15 Decorators vs designers 27:20 Order of operations for setting up the team 30:11 Everything we wish a client had before working on a home 32:47 Tip for our listeners 37:50 How to talk about budgets and be realistic about costs 40:22 Budgets that Colton works with 50:42 “My job as the architect is to either get them a great interior designer, or a lot of times these guys will bring work my way, and so we’ll work together to program the house. So we say, ‘The house can be anything. What do you want it to be?’ and we kind of define that and that’s where we should start.” 16:51 https://www.coltonbroadbentdesign.com/ @cbroadbentdesign https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Hello everybody and welcome to Dear Alice. Today we've got a very special guest with us. It is

0:28.4

Fabulous Mr. Colton Broadband. He is an architectural designer that we've actually done quite a bit

0:34.4

of work with lately and he's become a favorite. We shouldn't say that we have favorites but we do love

0:40.1

Colton. What do we do? One of the things we love about him and Sue feel free to add in here is he's

0:46.9

very very thoughtful in his home designs. Yeah and he's got his undergrad in landscape architecture

0:56.1

so I love that he really flies to each site, considers what's going on before he even starts to design

1:03.1

a home. So very holistic in his approach to designs. I also love that Colton, he's a student of like

1:10.3

always, and we kind of give ourselves as not too, we're always learning, searching, trying to

1:15.5

sort out good design and ways to become better and I think that's something that Colton does.

1:20.0

Well all the time he always has certain books in tow with him in his bag to reference he has

1:25.2

dog-eared, he's passionate and I think that that is something really rare at WCN Architects.

1:31.9

We see a lot of plans come through the door from like new clients, they're like considering

1:37.6

building and they have these plans and majority of them aren't thoughtful. They're big or they

1:44.0

have what they think they thought they wanted but there's something really magical about a thoughtful

1:49.3

floor plan and you can always tell. I can always tell, I think Jessica always tell. When things

1:54.4

are centered up and they create these moments and a thoughtful architect, our architectural designer

1:59.7

will do that and that's something that Colton is. Yes, welcome Colton. Thank you guys, thanks for

2:04.8

that introduction. I feel like I'm just gonna float out of the room. I'm so, I feel so honored and

2:10.8

I will start out by saying thank you guys for having me. This is a huge honor. I'm a fan, I listened

2:15.4

to it. Love the intro, I think that's probably Corey. Love the intro song and love listening to you

2:21.4

guys, love you guys as friends, so really appreciate you guys having me. Yeah, of course, I feel
