78 years of painting.

We meet Geraldine Robarts, the painter and teacher who spent her life in Africa and in art.

This is a tree of how I feel I am now, bent over from too much work.

Geraldine's story is the first program will be making of several focusing on the working

lives of octogenarians, whether it's a passion for what they do or the simple need to

keep earning a living. These workers are putting in a shift well into their ninth decade.

What can they teach us about the nature of work?

And as retirement ages creep higher, when is the right age to down tools?

I've picked up a paintbrush when I was two years old, to say three years old,

as I had to sit with my grandmother, who was a fashion designer.

We sat at the same table every day and she gave me pencils and scraps of cloth and scissors and I clothed these figures and I think that was the start of my journey.

So that's 78 years of painting.

Geraldine Robarts is a professional artist and educator.

Her first public exhibition was at a gallery in Johannesburg in 1958 at the age of 19.

She works with oil, acrylic and watercolours,

and every inch of wall space in her Nairobi home

is adorned with brightly coloured canvases vying for attention.

We have a tree, it's called a coral tree, and it a red tree and it loses all its green leaves and every part of it is red.
