Summary

This week, guest-host Nate Chinen talks to Kalia Vandever, a trombonist and bandleader who recently performed alongside Harry Styles in the U.S. and Europe during his “Love on Tour” tour. In the interview, Kalia explains how she got used to performing in front of gigantic, loud, high-energy crowds. She also shares how her experience touring with Harry has informed her solo work. After the interview, Nate and co-host June Thomas talk about the challenges and learning opportunities that come from moving to a larger stage–literally or figuratively. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, Kalia discusses some of her favorite horn sections in popular music. The only thing that I couldn't prepare for was the shows. I couldn't imagine what it would

0:16.5

feel like to play for that many people, nor could I imagine playing for that energetic

0:22.6

of a crowd. The fans are very loud.

0:25.4

Welcome back to Working. I'm your host, June Thomas. And I'm your other host, Nate Chinen.

0:35.8

Nate, it is so nice to see you again. Tell me, who's voice did we hear at the top of the show?

0:41.2

That was Kalea Van De Verr, a jazz trombonist and composer. A jazz trombonist. Why did you want

0:48.6

to speak with her? Well, Kalea is actually one of the more exciting young artists on the

0:54.9

improvised music scene today. She's someone I've been watching with great interest since her debut

1:00.2

album in 2019, which was titled In Bloom. But what led me to invite her on working was an

1:08.6

extraordinary experience that she's recently had as part of the record-breaking arena and stadium

1:14.1

tour by none other than Harry Styles. What? Yeah. So what was that like? I wanted to hear about it.

1:23.1

And I was especially intrigued to know how it had influenced her own music.

1:28.6

Yeah. No doubt. Well, I am very excited to hear this interview. But something tells me that you

1:34.9

have an extra segment exclusively for Slate Plus members. What will they hear? Yeah, we had some

1:40.3

fun with that. Kalea is Juilliard trained. She's a band leader and composer and prolific collaborator.

1:49.1

But she's also been a member of some horn sections, you know, in rock bands and pop bands and

1:55.0

not just with Harry Styles. So I asked her for a few of her own personal touchstones. What are

2:01.6

some favorite horn sections and what makes them great? Wow. If you are a member of Slate Plus,

2:08.2

you'll get to hear that at the end of the episode. And if you aren't, it's really, really easy to

2:13.6

join as a Slate Plus member. You get to hear extra segments on this show and others like the waves

2:19.2

and the culture gap fest. You'll get bonus episodes of podcasts like Big Mood, Little Mood,

2:24.8

and Slow Burn. And of course, you will never hit a paywall on Slate.com. To learn more, go to
