Summary

This week, host Isaac Butler talks to Anthony McGill, principal clarinetist for the New York Philharmonic. In the interview, Anthony describes his weekly routine, which includes practicing lots of different pieces at any given time, rehearsing, and playing multiple shows per week. He also talks about his meditation practice, his ability to play and be swept away by the music at the same time, and his Grammy-nominated album American Stories.  After the interview, Isaac and co-host Ronald Young Jr. discuss the different preparation timelines of musicians and actors.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, Anthony talks about meeting some of his musical heroes.  Send your questions about creativity and any other feedback to working@slate.com or give us a call at (304) 933-9675. The unexpected in music is the thing that turns us on I think and the biggest surprises happen sometimes in the most

familiar pieces if you listen to whatever a favorite song and all of a sudden you hear this one thing,

0:25.7

that's the thing that inspires.

Welcome back to Working. I'm your host, Ronald Young Jr.

0:38.8

It's good to be back with you again.

0:40.3

He is the principal clarinetist with the New York Philharmonic, and I think it's probably

0:51.4

worth mentioning he is the first African American principal

0:54.3

musician in that organization's history.

0:56.8

You know that's all I needed to hear.

0:58.2

That is the type of news that I am here for.

1:01.2

Why did you want to talk to Anthony right now?

1:04.0

Well, we don't actually talk about that aspect of his career at all because, you know, this is a

1:08.0

creativity and craft-focused thing, you know, but I really wanted to talk to Anthony because we just haven't had a lot of classical musicians on the show.

1:16.0

Honestly, we've had a lot of jazz musicians, we've had opera singers, we've had composers,

1:20.0

but I felt like this was a field we were really missing, the kind of purely

1:24.4

interpretational field, right? And I've always been really curious about like

1:28.8

what I think of is almost like a straight jacket of like the sheet music is written and the conductor's interpretation everything so I've always wanted to ask like what part of your job do you actually see as creative you know?

1:40.0

That's awesome and I'm very much looking forward to this conversation but I'm assuming that you have something special for our Slate Plus members. What can they expect?
