I never thought about money much. Well, not until I realised that I was on my own out in the world

after my parents died and I started my first job, age 22, at Harrods. I was so happy that I got

that job. I was so happy that I'd started my career in the best retail Emporium, that I didn't look too much at the wages.

I just kind of kept my head above water, just.

And that was the way it was for quite a while, until I got the big job,

creative director of Harvey Nichols, age 31, and I was on the board.

And I got that job because I knew that what I had done with

Harvey Nichols had made it famous. People talked about this store and I knew that the people

who owned that business were making a lot of money. And so I decided to push that little bit more

and ask for more.

And it was more than just about what I thought my self-worth was.

What really propelled me forward was when I found out that the finance director was on more than me

because they look after the money.

That's where the power is.

And what I was so angry about was there wouldn't have the money. That's where the power is. And what I was so angry about was

there wouldn't have been money had it not been for the great retail emporium that was created

by the creatives. And so I left and I set up my own business. But you know what I did? I handed the reins of money over to the men,

to the finance people to keep their eye on it. I kind of knew what was going on. Of course I did was my

business, but I still felt in the back of my mind that their knowledge and their power was greater than me.

Somewhere deep down, that female soft part of me was, yeah, it takes a bloke, a ballsy

bloke to look after the hard stuff.

And over those years, a couple of times I got burnt.
