| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Daily Dad podcast, where we provide one lesson every single day to help you with your most important job, being a parent. |
| 0:12.9 | I'm Ryan Holiday, and I draw these lessons from ancient philosophy, modern psychology, practical wisdom, and insights from parents just like you all over |
| 0:23.8 | the world. Thank you for listening, and we hope this helps. |
| 0:31.8 | Hey, it's Ryan. Welcome to another episode of the Daily Dad podcast. In today's episode, I wanted to tell a little |
| 0:42.0 | story and share a rule I've learned that's been wonderful for me as a parent and a writer and a |
| 0:51.4 | human being. So let's get into it. When I first moved to Austin, this would have |
| 0:57.1 | been in 2013, I went out for lunch with my friend Austin Cleon. And Austin is amazing. I've been a |
| 1:05.1 | longtime reader of his stuff. If you haven't read, steal like an artist, keep going. That's like my new favorite of his, but he's a |
| 1:12.4 | wonderful writer. And he took me out to lunch. We went to a place in East Austin that is no longer there. |
| 1:19.2 | It's been gentrified out of existence. Actually, I like what's there much better. But anyways, |
| 1:25.3 | we went to this great place. I remember I had meatloaf or |
| 1:27.7 | something like that. But after we ate, he drove me around the city, showing me some things and |
| 1:33.5 | giving me advice. And he was a little older, and he was already married, and he had kids. And I |
| 1:39.2 | remember asking him how he made time for all of it. And he said, I don't. He said the artist's life is all about |
| 1:47.3 | trade-offs. And then he gave me a little rule that has stuck with me always. He said, work, |
| 1:52.7 | family, scene, pick two. Now work, that's your creative output. That's what you do professionally. |
| 2:01.9 | Family, that's your spouse, your kids, or close personal relationships. |
| 2:06.2 | And then seeing, that's the fun stuff that comes along with success. |
| 2:11.1 | Parties, fancy dinners, important friends, the stuff that looks good on Instagram that you can brag about that falls in your lap like a wonderful |
| 2:19.4 | surprise, offers, invitations, perks. And it'd be wonderful, of course, if you could have it all, |
| 2:26.8 | but you can't. You can party it up and maybe hang on to a relationship, but you won't have much time |
| 2:32.2 | left for work. You can grind away at your craft, |
