Summary

Let's face it β€” we could all use some help right now. So today on the pod, we're looking at a few of our favorite questions about race and identity from our "Ask Code Switch" series. We're getting into food, relationships, money, language, friendship and more, so you know it's about to get a little messy (in the best way.)

What's good, y'all? This is GD. So, earlier today, we found out that Coatswitch,

0:07.5

our little podcast, was named Apple's podcast of the year, which is

0:12.6

wow, because there are like up a trillion podcasts out there. But also because, like,

0:18.4

what a long way we have come. And I kind of just want to talk to you about the news landscape

0:24.3

over the years since we've been doing this. Because after Ferguson, a bunch of big name

0:29.6

news outlets that you've almost certainly heard of, they started teams that focused on race

0:34.6

and justice and marginalized people in the United States. And those teams and those verticals

0:39.6

covering race, they're all gone now. Not because the work wasn't good or it wasn't important

0:45.8

and the journalists that were working at those places weren't talented because it was, and they were.

0:52.2

But because the very big media organizations they belong to decided that covering the

0:57.3

stuff was too hard and it didn't make money. That's really just what it was in the end,

1:01.8

just point blank. So, if you really bang with us at Coatswitch, I need to tell you that we probably

1:08.0

would not even be here right now, worried not for the fact that public radio is not profit-driven.

1:13.1

And we got a chance to find our footing and an audience because of the support listeners like

1:17.7

y'all give to your local public radio stations. So, I wanted to thank you and have a shrewd

1:23.0

and the rest of the crew. And also, I wanted to ask you to support your local public radio station

1:28.8

because that support makes this podcast and other podcasts at NPR possible. And the way you can do

1:35.2

that is by going to donate.NPR.org slash Coatswitch. Thank you y'all and, you know, be easy.

I'm Shereen Marisol Maraji. I'm Gene Demby and this is Coatswitch.

From NPR. Shereen, you know what I really, really, really been missing during this whole pandemic

situation. I bet the list is long. Eating at restaurants maybe? Yes, definitely. Absolutely.

Flooding with strangers. You are up-flirts. Even though you're married. How about that one?
