Summary

Trey and Ken this week start off the show by looking at both the content and the fallout from Bob Woodward’s new book Fear. Both are fascinated with what it might mean for the organizational structure of the White House. Ken suggests that the drama of taking papers of the president’s desk is probably overplayed.   Relatedly, Trey and Ken then look at the anonymous New York Times Op-Ed. In uncommon agreement, although for slightly different reasons, both Guys agree that the author should simply have resigned and gone public with his criticism of the president instead of continuing to engage with a president who is “anti-democratic.” Ken and Trey also suggest it is undemocratic to try and undo the president’s agenda.   Next The Guys turn to the tight race Ted Cruz faces in Texas. The big question is: is this closeness related to the actions of Ted Cruz or is it part of larger demographic shifts?   Then Trey and Ken look at the most recent NAFTA developments. Specifically the bilateral agreement with Mexico and the remaining issues with Canada. Ken points out it is unlikely to move forward, but Trey wonders if Democrats in the Senate might not shift to deal a blow to a free trade agreement.   The last issue is the Manafort plea deal. Ken has a unique take arguing that Manafort may be trying to angle for a better deal and, perhaps even a pardon. Welcome to the politics, guys, a place for bipartisan, rational, and civil debate on American politics and policy.

0:05.9

I'm Trey Orndorf, a political scientist at Oklahoma Christian University, and I'm joined this week by Ken Katkin, who is now, or at least for this semester, a professor of law at University of Colorado.

0:18.1

Ken, how is it in Colorado?

0:20.5

Colorado is fantastic.

0:22.1

It's, you know, it's sunny and beautiful out every day.

0:26.0

There's virtually no mosquitoes here.

0:28.4

It's, the mountains are beautiful, and I love being out here.

0:31.7

Oh, I love mountains, too.

0:32.7

And as a matter of fact, I have a soft spot my soul for not having mosquitoes, having been a recent Florida transplant.

0:41.4

So I understand that.

0:43.0

I understand that.

0:44.6

Well, Ken, it's always wonderful to have you.

0:46.6

And I think one of the first things that we want to take a look at this week, and this has been a big revelation, and this might actually take a bit of time,

0:55.5

is the Woodward book that has come out, and then the Trump response to that. So really, I think

1:02.4

there's kind of two stories going on here. One is the book itself and what it may or may not

1:08.8

reveal about the Trump presidency. And I think the second thing

1:12.7

that's happening here is been the response to the book, which has kind of brought us back to the

1:17.9

question, fake news and what does that mean in reporting. And so I think we might want to start

1:24.0

with that first question, which is, you know, the book itself and what it's

1:27.8

kind of doing. And it's a, it's a, I know that you have actually owned the book. I have only

1:33.0

gotten to read excerpts of the book to this point. But we've got some really fascinating quotes

1:38.5

already coming out, right? So we've got Kelly calling Trump, quote, an idiot. We got Cohn calling him a professional liar. We got
