Summary

Hosted by Ash Kelley and Alaina Urquhart from the hit show Morbid. You can binge the entire series early and ad-free right now by subscribing to Wondery+ in Apple Podcasts or the Wondery App. When 90-year-old Laurence Pilgeram drops dead on the sidewalk outside his condo, you might think that’s the end of his story. But, really, it’s just the beginning. Because Laurence and others like him have signed up to be frozen and brought back to life in the future. And that belief will pull multiple generations of the Pilgeram family into a cryonics soap opera filled with dead pets, gold coins, grenades, fist fights, mysterious packages, family feuds, Hall of Fame baseball legends, and frozen heads — lots of frozen heads. From Wondery, comes a story about life, death, and what comes next. Follow Frozen Head on Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts. Listen to Frozen Head:

Lawrence Pilgrim, a lifelong scientist, planned for death his entire life because for him, death wasn't the end. It was just the beginning.

0:28.0

Oh my gosh. Okay, we're talking about cryogenic head-free thing. I think I'm so excited. I've been obsessed with this topic ever since I saw it on an episode of Golden Girls where they all dreamed that they had their heads frozen.

0:40.0

Thank you for being ahead. Lawrence's dream, which is to be frozen and to be brought back to life in the future, pulls us into a cryonics soap opera filled with dead pets, grenades and family feuds,

holophane baseball legends and frozen heads. I have so many questions. Is it actual grenades? Is it grenades like on Jersey Shore? Who are the baseball legends?

1:05.0

I just how many heads total? 10 to 20? I don't. I'm gonna find out. It's a story about the desire to avoid death. The length people will go to make that a reality and what it means to be alive to begin with.

Ash. Yes, Elena. What's going to happen to you when you die? I am going to have my ashes scattered somewhere. Be you, Tuffal. Okay, I love that for you. Thanks.

2:29.0

But what I actually meant was what happens to you after you die? Oh, you mean the big question. Right. Like when you die, are you gone or... Oh, like you mean am I going to haunt you? Yeah, because I am definitely going to haunt you.

2:46.0

Oh, I know. I know. Well, it's a question that Lawrence Pilgrim spent his life thinking about right up until April 10th, 2015, when he dropped dead on the sidewalk.

3:01.0

He was around 90, so it's not a super huge shock. There was no foul play. Nothing unusual at the scene. It was just a natural death.

3:10.0

And if the mind is the face plant on concrete and grass, it's pretty much the best kind of death you could hope for. 90 long successful years and then boom, you're dead.

3:21.0

Except that's not how Lawrence saw it. For Lawrence, death was not the end. This was just the beginning. And the real shocks were still to come.

3:33.0

From Wondery, the makers of Over My Dead Body and the Shrink Next Door comes a new series about a life-long search for answers.

3:42.0

He was just kind of like the mad scientist. Why do we get old and die and what can we do to a person? For second chances.

3:49.0

That was his goal to have his whole body preserved and sometime in the future brought back.

3:56.0

He had asked her just to sort of out of the blue, what do you think of cryonics? And the lengths people go to get them. And there are turtles, grenades, human antifreeze, gold goliens, and frozen heads. Lots of frozen heads.

4:14.0

We can see that there's a body in there and immediately see that the body has no head.
