Summary

With Matt Serra out and about in Orlando enjoying a family day at Disney World, Jim Norton is joined by guest co-hosts Din Thomas and Jon Anik on today’s episode of UFC Unfiltered! Anik uses his cage-side perspective as the play-by-play announcer of last Saturday’s UFC on ESPN: Thompson vs. Holland card to provide an in-depth recap of the action that took place in Orlando from the prelims on up to the main card. As the conversation shifts to Michael Bisping’s criticism of the strategy employed by Kevin Holland in his fourth-round corner stoppage TKO loss to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in the main event, Din and Jon find themselves on opposite sides of the argument over whether Holland demonstrated bad fight IQ. The guys mix in some UFC 282 talk with an assessment on the landscape of UFC’s light heavyweight division, discussing fights from the prelims on up to the re-shuffled main event title fight between light heavyweight contender Magomed Ankalaev and former champion Jan Blachowicz.

Welcome to UFC on filter. Please tell me that's on video. I've never been happier.

0:13.2

I'll make real fucking five kids. I'm gonna make my ass.

0:21.1

Okay, welcome to UFC unfiltered. Different Matt Matt is away today in Florida. I guess he's decided he didn't feel like coming back in on the hotel room. And I'm in Los Angeles. So thanks to Dean and John for for kind of jumping into that we appreciate it.

0:41.1

Well, I just got off the phone with Matt and he is actually in Disney right now. So he's he called me to make sure I was still jumping on with you, but he's with his family. He's in Disney somewhere running around and I hung out with him over the weekend. So, you know, I got a chance to catch up with him.

0:56.1

Oh, you were down there. Yeah, yeah. Well, I mean, I live I live like two hours from Orlando. So I just drove up to hang out with Matt.

1:04.1

You drove two hours to see Matt. That bad. Yeah, I know he wouldn't drive two hours this evening. Yeah, no, I live 40 minutes from that. He never hears since I've seen him once in a year.

1:17.1

And John, thanks for you ever I John do you ever get sick of MMA because you like you you're doing a lot of the broadcast. Do you ever just want to talk about anything else?

1:27.1

Well, I guess I'd be more than the fact that I can't watch as much of the other promotions as I used to honestly, right? Like my dear friend Kenny Florian who I do our show with like I can't watch his work because I got 41 UFC shows a year, Jimmy to wrap my head around.

1:42.1

I would never drive two hours to see Matt Sarah by the way, but it's great to be with you guys pretty challenging for me with the quick turn just got back from Orlando drove through the night as Dean knows I'm also a Floridian.

1:52.1

So just hitting the ground running, you know, wheels up again in about 48 hours for a big pay per view this weekend, boys.

1:59.1

I always like when I'm I hate when I'm working and you have to work at the end of your trip like we had to go away to work like I'm a way to work right now.

2:06.1

And I had like five days in L.A. to relax, but I have to do what I have to do tomorrow night. And it's like I hate the work at the end of it.

2:12.1

I really like to work at the beginning and then just stay for a few days and do nothing. That's the only way to do it. If I was ever to bring my kids on a UFC live event, I haven't been able to do that yet for one reason or another.

2:24.1

But yeah, if I was ever going to do that, we certainly would not leave the continental United States. Let's just start there. And yeah, you're not doing anything recreationally on the front end. And for me too, it's just.

2:35.1

Gosh, I mean, Mick Manard and Sean Shelby don't care about me. So we got you know, 28 more athletes this weekend. So for me, I hunkered down I ate every single meal in Orlando in my hotel room. That tells you what my road life is like. So everyone.

2:48.1

And are you working the whole time when you're doing that? Like are you are you in front of the because I'm so bad at doing that. I'm so bad at. But you guys both like Dean, you do a great job too.

2:57.1

But what you're doing is you're just kind of coming in and talking about what you're seeing in the fight. So for you, it's a little bit more. I'm thinking about what I'm watching right now. Do you do any prep work before those?

3:07.1

Not for that. I do a little bit, but not much because I mean, I just it's not really necessary because I am just reacting to what I just saw or what I'm seeing. But, but when I'm working at desk, I have this obviously have to do some prep work. And I got to tell you and to John's credit, there's no one who studies more than him who's more in the room than him who does his work. He is the standard and everyone at the UFC looks up to John. So like, whenever I think about going out, I go man, John's in a room, steady and let me go back and study.

3:36.1

Well, that's nice. Obviously for me to hear from my dear friend Dean Thomas, but I don't I don't prep for the flowers, Jimmy, like I truly say to you, like I have to bridge the gap. I don't have the greatest memory in the world. You know, I'm not a lifelong martial artist. But what can I can control? I can control is is the work. And it's just a lot of athletes, man.

3:57.1

You know, and even like this past week, I'm voicing the paper view on Thursday during the Orlando fight week. So for me, it's kind of like 10 days out, I really got to start diving in.

4:07.1

But this doesn't hurt my cause to be sure talking to you guys about what we're about to do every little bit helps. And I always say if the fight car got delayed five hours, we'd make good use of the time. But I appreciate we say Dean and, you know, it's got to keep burning it. My man, you know, what do you do?

4:23.1

Like for you as preparation, will you watch a bunch of fights? You know, especially with someone you're not familiar with, will you ask your assistant or somebody to get you their fights?
