Summary

Tom Clarke is joined by James Restall in London and Molly Hudson in Australia to discuss the latest from the Women's World Cup.

Sarina Wiegman has shown she's not afraid to make changes in this tournament - is this key to England's success? Lauren James has been the standout player for the Lionesses so far, but which other players deserve praise? (00:00)

England take on Nigeria next - what kind of challenge do they pose? Former England defender and Times columnist Casey Stoney has her say on which Lionesses will play a huge part in how the rest of the tournament will play out for England. (22:45)

In the second half of the show, Gregor Robertson and Willis Bennett join Tom Clarke to look ahead to the brand new EFL season. The Championship begins on Friday, but which teams are predicted to have a positive season in the 'toughest league' to progress from? (35:25)

Leagues One and Two also get started this weekend - and you might be surprised to find out which team in the latter are expected to shine this season! (55:06)

Hello and welcome back to the game podcast. The new season is nearly upon us, but in

0:05.5

many ways did last season ever really end. We'll be talking past, present and future

0:10.2

on this episode and nothing sums that up better than the women's World Cup. I'm Tom Clark

0:15.2

and joining me to discuss England's performance so far and their hopes for the rest of the

0:18.8

tournament are Molly Hudson and James Restall. Now Molly, welcome onto England's most recent

0:23.7

6-1 thrashing of China shortly, but I wanted to start by asking for your general impressions

0:28.0

of the tournament so far and I must say on the the webcams that we're chatting on right now,

0:32.7

I'm slightly sad that your screen is an upside down given that you're down under, but I, you know,

0:36.9

I'm going to put some effort into putting it on. How have you found how have you found life

0:41.4

down under? I've been here so long, I forgot I'm upside down over here, that's what it is.

0:45.8

It's been incredible actually, I think having done the 2019 World Cup and I think we talked

0:51.5

on this podcast about how for much of that tournament in France, you didn't you wouldn't really

0:56.2

have known it was happening, especially in Paris, there just wasn't really much advertising,

1:01.2

there wasn't really much merchandise, the local people weren't that interested in the tournament and

1:06.4

and I think that's what's been so impressive, it genuinely really feels like you're in the tournament

1:10.6

over here and I think obviously we knew from the Euros, England got very engaged and it really

1:16.9

felt like that last summer but it's been, it's been really surprising to get that over here really

1:21.8

in a country of Australia size, in a country which isn't really a footballer, a soccer as they

1:29.3

call it country, so it's been really impressive in that sense and I think obviously having a host

1:34.0

nation in it that are at least in with the chance of winning as help too, but yeah, I would say

1:40.8

certainly it's been a pleasant surprise how engaged people are with the actual football over here.

1:45.5

Tell me a little bit more just briefly on that engagement, I mean, you know, are you walking
