In today's episode, I'll be joined by Johanna Friedrichs Deuter, a specialist in Old Norse literature, myth, and manuscripts. Johanna is a lecturer at Yale and is currently working on a book about women during the Viking Age. I'm very excited to have her on today and I definitely expect to learn something from her as well. Johanna, thank you so much for coming on today. Thank you for inviting me, Noah. I'm so pleased to be on the show. Yeah, it's my pleasure, not a problem.

Is there anything that we should be particularly excited about when studying Viking women? And how did

Viking women differ from other cultures at the time? Yeah.

1:44.4

Well, Noah, that was a big question.

1:47.8

And I guess I'm writing a book about the entire thing.

1:50.2

So I'll try to just hit some of the main points.

1:53.5

I think just from all the research I've been doing, that life was quite exciting in the

1:58.4

Viking Age for many women.

2:00.2

I mean, it was tough for sure. And

2:02.4

there was, you know, work was very stressful for the body and so on. But there were also kind of

2:10.7

lots of changes happening in society and techniques. And so you might actually be able to travel to another country or at least travel away from your farm where you were born.

2:25.5

And, you know, there probably weren't, you know, as many options necessarily available to women as to men in terms of going off on these Viking raids
