slash promo. This is open to debate. I'm John Don Van. Hi everybody for an episode that we're considering a back-to-school special with a debate about what is going on in America's public school classrooms or shouldn't be. It's a debate that's going to see some of the tug of war that's

also taking place over the words woke and wokness, which is a word often used by

policy makers on the right as a put down of some of the goals and methods

taken up by the progressive left, but it's also a word that the left stands by

as capturing something worthy, especially as intended by those who first coined the term

to recognize inequalities in society

and whose goal was to do something about them.

Of course there is a lot of room here to disagree on what the words woke and wokeness

actually mean and perhaps we will see some of that as we discuss something as

complex as public school education. Here's the question we're debating. Wokeness

in public schools hurting or helping students.
