I have the distinct honor to be able to come before you and say,

I actually lost white population in my community.

I lost.

You heard that correctly.

You're about to hear a New York City Council member go on a racist tirade against white people,

and what has he met with?

Applaus and laughter.

Today you're going to meet Charles Barron. He's a Democrat, of course. He's a former New York

State representative who's now sitting on New York City's City council. He represents, I believe, District 42,

again as a Democrat. Now, he's talking at a national summit on gentrification. For those of you

who are unaware with the term gentrification, it's essentially when you have a down-and-out neighborhood

that's predominantly low income and suddenly high-income, middle- class individuals start moving into this neighborhood.

Oftentimes this is accompanied with certain businesses moving into a neighborhood.

Think of Starbucks, a Whole Foods, and all of a sudden the income of this neighborhood goes up

and it is assumed that then black individuals or marginalized people from these neighborhoods are pushed out.

That's just a basic, I guess, explanation for gentrification. Now, he's speaking on this national

summit on gentrification and he says, you know what? I am proud to announce that I actually have

the white folk moving out of my district and out of my neighborhood. Let's hear it from the horse's mouth.
