Summary

This week, we share the first half of a talk from Bishop Barron on John Henry Newman’s book, The Grammar of Assent. The book concerns the question of belief–how we come to believe in God–and is widely considered his most important text.

Also, it’s a timely topic, since John Henry Newman will be canonized in just a couple weeks, on October 13. Bishop Barron will be attending the canonization, then a few days later will deliver a talk at Oxford University on “John Henry Newman and the New Evangelization.” That talk, which we’re planning to livestream, will focus primarily on The Grammar of Assent.

0:13.2	studio. He's actually flying from Los Angeles all the way across the country to Washington,
0:18.8	DC for a series of meetings for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. But we didn't want to leave
0:23.9	you hanging. And so that's why we're bringing you this talk today from Bishop Aaron on John
0:29.4	Henry Newman. It's actually the third and final talk in a series of three talks he delivered in
0:35.7	2010 at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He was over there speaking to seminarians.
0:43.1	Each of the three talks focused on one of John Henry Newman's great books. The first talk was on
0:49.4	the Apologia Pro Vita Sua, which was John Henry Newman's intellectual conversion memoir. And we
0:55.4	shared that talk here on the podcast. You'll find it in episodes 154 and 155 in case you missed it.
1:02.0	The second talk focused on Newman's essay on the development of Christian doctrine,
1:06.8	which we also shared here in episodes 170 and 178. Today, though, we're going to pick up with the
1:12.5	third and final talk. It covers Newman's text, The Grammar of Ascent. The Grammar of Ascent.
1:19.6	Now, it's especially timely that we're hearing this talk today because in just a couple weeks,
1:24.8	Pope Francis is going to canonize John Henry Newman, recognizing him as a saint.
1:30.7	The canonization will take place on October the 13th. It'll be in Rome and Bishop Aaron will be
1:36.7	there in person. We're planning to share all sorts of behind-the-scenes photos and videos. So be
1:42.2	sure you're following Bishop Aaron on social media to receive all that. But then, even more
1:47.2	exciting, a few days later, Bishop Aaron will be traveling from Rome to England. He'll be in
1:52.3	Oxford where he's been invited to deliver a major lecture on John Henry Newman in the very
1:58.8	church where John Henry Newman served in Oxford in his time as an Anglican chaplain. The church is
2:04.8	the University Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. It's right in the heart of Oxford. And Bishop
