Summary

Several recent bestselling books have focused on the Enlightenment, including Stephen Pinker's Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress. But what was the Enlightenment, and how should we view its effects? Bishop Barron offers his take today.

A listener asks how Christians determine which parts of the Mosaic law in the Old Testament are still in effect today.

Welcome back to the Word on Fire show. I'm Brandon Vaat, the host and the content director

0:09.8

here at Word on Fire. Joining me is the great Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop Barron, good

0:14.4

to talk with you. I'm not sure how great I am, but always nice to see you and talk to

0:19.1

you. Well, I call you the great bishop and you recently had the chance to perform one

0:23.6

of the very important functions of a bishop for the very first time. After three years

0:28.0

of being a bishop, you finally ordained your first priest. Tell us about that. It was a

0:33.7

thrill. It was a great honor. You're right. I mean, it's one of the maybe the distinctive

0:40.2

thing that a bishop, quad bishop, can do is ordained priest. And the Dominicans asked

0:45.2

me, I think it was last year if I could ordain their guys. And there was a schedule problem

0:49.9

last year. So I said, well, how about let's make sure we get it for 2019. So I went out

0:54.1

to Catholic you, my old stomping grounds and stayed with the Dominicans, their house of

0:58.9

studies, and then on Saturday ordained. The great privilege of ordaining six wonderful

1:04.0

young guys. I had dinner with them the night before. So I chance to meet them and talk

1:07.8

to them and very impressive young guys. And what a thrill it was. I mean, that great

1:13.4

Basilica, which I know well, graduated twice from that Basilica, went to master all the

1:18.2

time when I was a kid, and to preside there as a bishop. And even though I've attended

1:25.2

a hundred pre-sort nations over the years, but it's different when you're actually doing

1:30.4

it. And I had a wonderful MC, a master of ceremonies who kind of walked me through and just stood

1:36.2

right there and now stand up and now put the hat on and now you're doing this. Because

1:41.0

you know automatically what comes next in the ceremony. But it was just a thrill for

1:46.8

me and delighted to meet those guys. And then to feel this bond, I mean, that my, I'll

1:54.5

be connected to them for the whole their priesthood. So it was marvelous.
