Summary

The Netflix original series "The Crown", which has to do with the last months of the reign of King George VI and the first years of the reign of his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, demonstrates how societies must be grounded in God-given moral values for them to flourish. In this episode, Bishop Barron brings to light the theological underpinnings of the show, which serve as an encouragement for anyone struggling to pursue God's plan for her life. The listener question asks how Bishop Barron is able to discover spiritual themes in popular media.

Welcome back to the Word on Fire show. I'm Brandon Vot, the host and the content director

0:09.3

at Word on Fire. And with us is Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop Barron, welcome.

0:13.6

Hey Brandon, how you doing? I'm doing great. Now, hey, you recently had a really exciting

0:20.2

encounter. We mentioned a few episodes back that you've struck up a friendship with William

0:24.6

Friedkin. Or as you now call him Billy Friedkin, you guys are on a first name basis together.

0:30.5

Friedkin is the acclaimed director of the exorcist, that classic film. And you guys got

0:37.4

together, you did a little interview session. But then the next day or a little later, I've

0:42.0

forgot what the what it was, but he invited you to a special event. And you just recently attended

0:47.2

that. Tell us about it. Yeah, it was really a thrill when he was here. It was to do an interview

0:51.6

for a documentary he's doing on exorcism. And he just was asking me a number of sort of

0:57.0

theological questions about it. Anyway, we came into my office and he noticed I have this little

1:04.8

what he called like a little montage of the Simpsons. And he was, oh, you like the Simpsons. And I

1:10.1

said, oh, I love the Simpsons. And he said, well, you know, I got the opportunity, believe it or not,

1:14.2

in about 10 days to go to a table reading of the Simpsons, where you know, the cast comes in,

1:20.1

and they read through the script. And they invite always about maybe 25 or 30 people to sit around

1:26.2

and watch it. So do you want to go? So I of course jumped at it. So it was, oh, maybe 10 days ago now,

1:32.6

I met him, freaking for breakfast. We had a nice conversation. And we drove over to the Fox lot,

1:39.8

you know, and we had this little small, small-ish kind of house and this big table

1:46.7

in came the cast of the Simpsons, you know, who might have been listening to for 20 some years.

1:51.8

And it was a thrill. It was like attending a very funny little play. And it lasted, you know,

1:57.4

typical episode, maybe 25 minutes, but it was super entertaining. I had the chance most of the cast,

2:03.7

they kind of disappear quickly. I think they don't want to be, you know, mixing and mingling too much.
