Summary

The Internet has produced the most profound shift in communications since the printing press, and many in the Church are using it to spread the Gospel. But how best to do it? How do we share our faith online without succumbing to the toxicity and vitriol that saturate much of the digital world? Bishop Barron discusses these questions today and shares his own advice for becoming an online missionary. A listener asks how he should respond when sharing his faith on Facebook provokes criticism.

Welcome back to the Word on Fire show. I'm Brandon Vot the host and the content director at Word on Fire.

0:08.9

And with us as he is each week is the illustrious Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop Barron, welcome.

0:15.6

Hey Brandon, always good to be with you. How are you doing today?

0:18.1

I'm doing wonderful. We just crossed three major thresholds on our new media platforms.

0:25.0

I think we talked about one of them a couple episodes back. We got one million downloads now of this show, the Word on Fire show.

0:31.9

That was exciting. But then on your other platforms, you just crossed one million followers or one million likes on Facebook, which is a huge accomplishment.

0:42.0

And then almost the same week you crossed 20 million views on YouTube. Now what's your reaction to all of these accomplishments?

0:50.3

I think I'm thinking back maybe 10, 15 years ago. None of these things would have been on your radar. Would they?

0:55.7

Oh gosh, no, no. I mean, first of all, I'm thrilled by it and really grateful to so many people.

1:01.7

First on the word on fireside, people like yourself and many others that have made this possible.

1:06.9

But also I gosh, all those people that have that have accessed our work, you know, God bless you.

1:14.8

All those who've come on YouTube over the years, 20 million times, all the Facebook followers.

1:21.2

So yeah, and then this show, you know, you and I and Father Steve and others, you know, kind of cooked up this show, not that long.

1:28.0

It seems to me like yesterday. And that we've had now over a million downloads of it, I think is staggering.

1:34.4

You know, another, I know, maybe it seems like a banality, but it's the spiritual hunger. You know, if you put something about the spiritual order out there that's the least bit.

1:44.8

Intelligent or coherence, you know, or attractive. I think people they'll come to it. They'll listen.

1:51.9

So I find that really uplifting and encouraging and I hope it's encouraging to a lot of people.

1:56.9

That's a principle, you know, from economics. If someone's doing really well in a given business.

2:03.2

All right. That means there's a big audience out there. And I mean, I can get in there thing too. And, you know, fair enough. I'm great with that. You know, I, I, I'm not in competition with other Catholic evangelizers.

2:15.4

That's all get in there and that's what we can, you know.

2:18.4

So I find that for encouraging and I hope others do too. But I just I'm filled above all with a sense of gratitude about it.

2:25.5

I think we saw that same rising tides of lift all boats effect with the Catholicism series. After you release that, the, the level and the scope of Catholic media, it seems to me.
