This past summer, John Astrower went on a test flight.

He writes about aviation, so this isn't entirely unusual.

He used to cover it for the Wall Street Journal and now runs a website called the Air Current.

But the technology that he was testing, that's the amazing part.

He was in a small private plane, a Piper M600, flying at about 3,000 feet.

And he was with the company Garmin. It makes GPS systems.

They said, hey, press the button.

And the button on the dashboards is emergency auto-land.

You press the button and it starts talking to you.

It says emergency auto-land activated.

Please remain seated. We're landing at the nearest airport.

And the airplane takes over.

It will fly you to the nearest airport.

It will fly around weather.

It will put the flaps down. It will lower the landing gear.

It will go into a holding pattern to descend if it needs to.

It'll find effectively a GPS approach to fly the airplane right to the runway.
