soo's... That's typical of the Pharaoh Islands,

the kind of place where a member of parliament might burst into a traditional song during a political

interview.

I'm Tim Ekot and I've been visiting the pharaohs in the middle of the North Atlantic for the past

few years.

I like the way the islanders live in close proximity to their wild

wind-swept landscape, their unusual diet which still includes sea birds,

occasional whale meat, and very strongly flavored fermented

mutton. On recent visits I've been struck by the fact that it's commonplace to

spot people here who are clearly not ethnically Pharaohies And in fact the largest ethnic minority here now is

made up of women from Thailand and the Philippines. I couldn't help wondering

what on earth it must be like to move from the tropics to these treeless grass-covered

rocky islands and also whether the Faroese themselves were happy to have these incomers living among

them. In this episode of assignment I'm meeting the women and their Faroese

husbands as we travel around the islands.

When a step from the plane the first feeling I feel is the fresh air, I feel like I'm drowning because of the freshness of the air.

And of course I noticed that it's mountain and it's quite scary when you land.

So I was like thinking, oh my God, wow, is this Denmark? No, no, it's Far Island.
