Summary

Serena Williams vs. Maria Sharapova has produced the same result for more than a a decade and the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2015 were no exception. Joining David Law (BBC Radio 5 Live) and Catherine Whitaker (Live at Wimbledon) on the Tennis Podcast to talk about that, and Garbine Muguruza’s fabulous run to the final, is Telegraph Tennis Correspondent Simon Briggs. On Friday, Andy Murray faces Roger Federer for a place in the final, and Simon gives an insight into what the Telegraph will be doing to preview the match, the thoughts of Greg Rusedski, and who they all think will win. Novak Djokovic vs. Richard Gasquet is also previewed.  The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with the Telegraph, and supported by BNP Paribas, the bank for a changing world.

Hi I'm Layton Huet and you are listening to the tennis podcast.

Well hello welcome to the tennis podcast on women's semi-final day. We now know who is going to

0:18.4

be part of finals day because moments ago Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharpova in straight

0:25.7

sets and Garbena Mugaruta is going to be her opponent because she came through a three-set

0:32.1

hustle against Ignesca Radbanska to reach her first grand slam final. My name is David Law,

0:38.0

part of the BBC Radio 5 live commentary team. I'm alongside Catherine Whitaker from Live at Wimbledon

0:43.6

and Simon Briggs, the Telegraph tennis correspondent and we are the tennis podcast brought to you in

association with the Telegraph and supported by BNP Pabar, the bank for a changing world.

And Simon that was pretty regulation stuff wasn't it from Serena Williams exactly what we would have

1:02.7

expected I think. Did Sharpova touch the ball in the final game? I think there were three or four races

1:08.4

in it, very similar to the way she closed out against Azarenka. It's amazing that mental strength

1:13.4

that she has when the finish line is within reach. We were talking yesterday or the day before about

1:19.6

Serena having that advantage on serve over Sharpova which is a factor in every match they play but

1:24.3

if they're going to play at Wimbledon the serve is always bigger here. The margin of victory seemed

1:28.4

that little bit bigger. It was never that close or exciting I guess. Now I suppose we'd better talk

1:34.6

to Catherine Whitaker quite quickly here because apparently she's got to get off to live at Wimbledon

1:38.8

to do some more broadcasting but Catherine you've managed to squeeze us in. Yeah bigger and better

1:44.4

places to be David that's how I roll now. Oh steady honestly goodness me. Anyway the first match

1:51.2

today, Garbin and Mugaruta, she was fantastic wasn't she for a set in a bit. I thought she was

1:56.4

going to thrash Radvanska in straight sets. Yeah it looked very much like she was just going to blast

2:01.6

Radvanska off the course the court and I think experience for Radvanska allowed her to hang in there

2:07.3

and get that second set but Mugaruta was just better. She was just a better player today and I
