That is the weekend of the longest, shortest week in history as we process the earthquake

that emanated from a Lower Manhattan courtroom Thursday evening as Donald Trump became the first

former US president to be convicted of felony crimes. Former President Trump was

charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to keep hush money payments out of the public eye before the 2016 election.

The New York prosecution brought by Alvin Bragg was tried before a jury in Judge Juan Mershawn's courtroom, despite an aggressive defense strategy multiple violations of a gag order, overt abuse leveled at witnesses and the looming threat of a

glowering Donald Trump staring you down the jurors unanimously found Trump guilty on every count.

For those of us who watch this particular criminal prosecution with some furrowy brows and

worries that maybe this was the weakest by far of the four criminal

prosecutions before Trump. The truth was that it was I guess enough as it turns

out unanimously and beyond reasonable doubt, more than enough.

And while this case is going to stay tangled up in the appeals process for the foreseeable

future, it is still a testament to a system, rickety, ponderous, slow system that

still holds.
