As legend has it, shortly after dawn on May 17, 1606,

Tsar Dimitri crouched on a window ledge outside his palace in Moscow. This was not part of the Russian emperor's typical morning routine,

and was definitely not an activity that he and his new bride,

who was hiding inside in an adjacent room,

would have had on their ideal post-wedding itinerary.

But times were desperate.

There were assassins closing in.

So, Tsar Dimitri gazed down from his window perch.

The drop was substantial, but over in the direction of Red Square,

loyal citizens were streaming onto the Kremlin grounds.

If Dmitri could leap to the next building,

his supportive subjects would surely be able to arrive in time

to protect him from the horde of coordinated assassins who had surrounded his bedchambers
