In the modern world, we have a relatively narrow idea of who Jesus was.

But things were very different in the early years of Christianity.

Many different versions of his life story and personality proliferated,

while at the same time several other saviors also competed for attention.

These stories are at the centre of a new book, Heresy, Jesus Christ and the Other Sons of God,

by the classicist and author Catherine Nixie. She was joined

in conversation by Rob Atar for today's episode. In the modern world, we have a relatively

narrow understanding of Christianity and the story of Jesus. But this wasn't always the case,

was it? No, not to all. I mean, certainly I was brought up with the

relatively narrow understanding by my family who my parents had been a monk and a nun before they

met and married. And I was brought up with a very traditional idea of, you know, the nice Jesus

of Sunday School and sunbeams who healed the sick, cured the blind, let the lame walk.

And I hadn't realized that actually in the early days, there were so many different stories that were told about Jesus, so many different kinds of early Christianity.
