After primary voters go to the polls in six states Tuesday, notably California, New Jersey, and Iowa, which candidates came out on top?

What can we learn about the mood of the electorate in 2026? Is there hope yet maybe, just maybe, for better leadership in the great state of

California? Welcome, I'm Kyle Peterson with the Wall Street Journal. We're joined today by my

colleagues on the WSJ's opinion pages, columnist Alicia Finley and Matt Contenetti, who is always

worth reading in the journal's free expression newsletter.

Plenty of interesting results from Tuesday's primaries, but let's start at the top of the ticket in California,

the race to replace Governor Gavin Newsom, who will soon be riding off into the sunset, probably toward 2028.

And as a reminder, California has an unusual election system in a couple of ways.

First, this all-candidate jungle primary that sometimes results in two Democrats facing off

against each other in November. And second, mail ballots postmarked on time are valid if they

arrive a week later. And then at that point, the processing begins. So there is

often a heavy delay in reporting final winners in California. But here are the results in the
