All right, we are here with the second emergency pod of the week. If you had told me on the way to the Oscars on Sunday that I would be two, I'd be doing two emergency pods in the second week of the show. I probably would have said no way, but here we are. Matt, when you texted me this, I was literally out on a run.

And my first thought was, what does this mean?

What is resigning from the academy mean?

All right.

So let's talk about what this means and what it doesn't mean.

And first of all, let me go through.

I'm not going to read the whole statement that he put out. We're recording at about 415 on Friday.

This came out at about 345 on Friday.

He said in this long statement, my actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.

The list of those I have heard is long and includes Chris, he's referring to Chris Rock,

his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones. He goes on later in the statement to say,

I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements. So,

I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will

accept any further consequences the board deems appropriate. He finally says, change takes time and I am committed

to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason. So he has resigned

his membership, meaning he will no longer be a voter. He will not get invites to Academy screenings.

He will not get, you know, the treatment that the 10,000 or so Academy members get. But it doesn't

mean that he won't be allowed to be nominated in the future. Non-members can be nominated.
