Hades Urban Listeners, Will Smith published his apology to Chris Rock regarding the slap

0:05.5

during the Oscar ceremony earlier this year, and I thought I would analyze it.

0:10.5

Coincidentally, I've been working on a deep dive on apology, I've been reading all the research,

0:15.3

and really I've been thinking about apologies, effective apologies for decades as a couple's

0:20.3

therapists that often comes up in session. And so I thought I would analyze his apology.

0:26.0

My name is Dr. Kirkhan, I'm a therapist and a professor. Let's see what happens.

0:30.3

Now, he was the one who was violent, but I think he did that because he felt threatened somehow.

1:41.6

Not that that makes it okay. It was in my estimation, based on what I understand, even given the

1:47.0

background information, completely not okay, that he did that. My hypothesis about what happened,

1:52.7

I don't know if it's true, is based on his own book, excerpts from his book, and also interviews

1:58.3

that he's given about his childhood that involved witnessing domestic violence in his house.

2:04.4

He saw his father being quite violent with his mother, and he felt responsible as a lot of

2:09.9

children will tragically feel responsible even though it's not their fault. But they will feel
