For most of us in the United States, voting is just another task, albeit an extremely important one, to be squeezed into a busy

schedule. But at different times in history, Americans have had to struggle to cast their ballot.

In the Jim Crow era, black Americans faced a variety of artificial barriers to exercise

their right to vote, including poll taxes, literacy tests, and the threat of violence.
