Summary

Will Forte is the king of second chances, whether it was getting another shot at ‘Saturday Night Live’ after turning down Lorne Michaels or reviving his now iconic character MacGruber on Peacock after the 2010 movie bombed at the box office. In this episode, Forte breaks down how he overcame his SNL fears to deliver some of the show’s weirdest and funniest sketches and shares behind-the-scenes details of MacGruber’s full journey from one-off sketch to Super Bowl commercial to cult classic. He also opens up about his regrets around replacing Will Ferrell as George W. Bush on SNL and shares stories from filming his hilarious cameo on fellow SNL alum Tim Robinson’s ‘I Think You Should Leave’ and that time he ended up on a private jet with comedy hero Steve Martin.

This is the last laugh. I'm Matt Wilstein from The Daily Beast, and that was Will Forte as perhaps his greatest comedy creation in the 2010 movie, McGruber. We have been on quite a run of Saturday Night Live alums on this show recently, including last week's episode with Chris Parnell, The Lonely Islands Akiva Schaefer before that, and of course, Bill Hader a few weeks earlier.

And I could not be happier to keep it going this week with Will Forte, who was always one of my

favorite cast members during his eight seasons on SNL, before going on to star in shows like

1:24.2

The Last Man on Earth, and this past year's McGruber series on Peacock.

We had so much to talk about in this episode, including why he did the unthinkable

and actually turned down Lauren Michael's offer to join SNL before getting a second chance the next year,

and what it has been like to bring McGruber back from the dead over and over again.

What I really learned during this conversation is that Will is kind of the king of second

chances, and as far as I'm concerned, he's deserved every one of them. So here we go. This is

me with Will Forte. Well, how's it going? What's going on?

2:02.6

Kind of a crazy period right now. I just got done working in Albuquerque for a couple months.

2:09.9

And then I found out, you know, a couple weeks ago that I'm turning right around and going to Ireland for like four and a half, five months.
