Will disputed election results divide Afghanistan?

Hello again, I'm R&Aulni, and this is To the Point from Public Radio International.

The daily look at the issues Americans care about most. America's worst fears may have been realized by preliminary election results

released today in Afghanistan. President Ahmed Karzai's handpicked successor has been declared

the winner, but his opponent is rejecting the outcome due to evidence of massive fraud. That could

pit ethnic, Tajik's and Pashtuns against each other,

strengthening the Taliban and perhaps leading to another civil war.

Does the U.S. have the clout to make a difference?

Can the U.N. help mediate a nonviolent transition of power?
