Today, could Chile vote in the world's most progressive new constitution?

When Chile's current constitution was written, the country was ruled by a brutal military dictatorship.

It pursued some of the world's most extreme right-wing economic policies,

making it one of the richest countries in South America, but also among its most unequal.

A protest continued overnight in Chile, the latest phase of a movement that began over a hike in subway fares,

and has since grown to encompass broader frustrations over inequality.

Chile, which is home to 19 million people, is overwhelmingly diverse.

A scene on the map, it looks like a long, thin ribbon.

Running down the west coast of the continent, at 4,000 miles long,

its current constitution, which enshrines free market fundamentalism,

was overwhelmingly rejected by Chileans two years ago.

Kicks starting a process to replace it with a new one, fit for the 21st century.

Well, Chileans are going to the polls to vote on one of the most progressive constitutional proposals ever drafted.

The eyes of the world are on Chile as it looks to make higher education free,

recognizing its indigenous peoples for the first time ever make gender parity a constitutional guarantee,

and to mitigate the effect of climate change.

The country is now poised to approve or reject a radically different future.
