Summary

A devolution special of the New Statesman Podcast looks ahead to the local elections in Scotland and Wales.

Anoosh Chakelian is joined by Scotland Editor Chris Deerin to discuss Scotland, including Nicola Sturgeon's face mask slip-up, why the real race is for second, and whether Labour can win back Glasgow.

Anoosh then talks about the state of play in Wales with political reporter Freddie Hayward – and whether we’ll see the first signs of Labour winning back the so-called Red Wall.

Hi, I'm Anouche and I'm Chris. Today it's a devolution special and I'm delighted to be joined

0:35.8

by Chris Deeren, our Scotland editor, to talk about the upcoming Scottish elections

all of that on Thursday once all of the pieces have fallen into place without political editor

1:05.4

Andrew Marr. But Chris, thanks so much for joining us. Thanks for having me. It's a perfect time to

1:11.1

have you on, actually. There's a lot to talk about, but the most obvious topic dominating the

1:15.2

front pages of the Scottish papers today that we're recording on Tuesday morning is the first

1:19.5

1:24.1

a mask after she was filmed breaching the rules in a barbershop and police officers have

1:28.8

had to speak to her to remind her of the importance of wearing a mask. How damaging is this?

1:33.5

It's not the first time it's happened, is it? She had to apologise for taking a mask off at

1:37.6

a wake in December 2020, if I remember. Yeah, I hate to be a bore, but I do struggle to get

1:44.3

particularly exercised about this one. I think the First Minister briefly had her mask off.

1:49.8

I think we've all done it. We've gone into places and realised that we haven't

1:52.7

gotten a bit of a mask on, and the photograph gets taken at the right time then,
