When the Hospital is a Battlefield. On the morning of May 26th, 1992, a month

into the war in Bosnia, Serbian forces loyal to Yugoslavia's president Slobodon

Melosievich Shelled Cerevo, Bosnia's capital.

Dr. Emma Essma Zekevik, chief pediatrician at the country's main referral

center for pediatrics, saw that the Serbian forces were very close to the

hospital and worried about the safety of the staff and patients.

A Bosnian Territorial Defense Commander told her that it was unlikely that the Serbian forces would directly bombard the hospital.

Yet by 4 o'clock that afternoon she wrote

we realize that our hospital is being

directly bombarded.

We simply should not

could not believe this at first.

She and our colleagues decided that they had to evacuate.

There were 17 premature infinels and incubators in the neonatal wards.

Each of us carried two or three babies

and ran to the basement of the

obstetric and gynecological hospital.
