Summary

We're bringing you some of our favorite episodes of 2025 while we get a holiday break -- and prepare for our big America250 series. See you in 2026!

It's June 24th. In 2003, Jimmy Wales, the owner of Wikipedia, made the decision to put the site under the ownership of a non-profit company.

Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss why this decision made a huge difference for the site, and reflected a lot of the ways that the Internet has worked, and not worked, in the decades since. They are joined by journalist Garrett Graff, host of a new series called "Long Shadow: Breaking The Internet."

The first episode of Long Shadow is out now!

Hey, it's Jody. We are hurtling, hurtling, I tell you, towards a new year. And I don't know if you

0:05.4

were this way, but I tend to take this time of year to take stock a bit, think about how the past

0:10.4

year went, try to lock in some good memories, and also reconnect with the things that matter

0:15.4

to me going into a new year. It's not so much a resolution, but kind of a recalibration.

0:23.5

And I know for me, that often means remembering my values, the work that I love, the people

0:28.8

who make the stuff, whether it's music or art or books or audio, the stuff that helps me

0:33.4

make sense of myself and the world. I know that's all very high-minded, but if that's not what

0:39.0

this time of year is for, then I don't know what it is. Which all brings me to a gentle reminder,

0:45.1

dear listener, that the end of the year also means we are nearing the end of the Radiotopia

0:50.1

fall fundraiser. It has been such a joy to make this day over this past year. And as you know,

0:56.0

we have such big plans for next year as we head towards our America 250 series. And truly, we

1:02.2

cannot do it without listeners like you, taking the step from listener to becoming a Radiotopia

1:07.9

member. When you support Radiotopia, you are literally helping us make

1:11.7

this show by providing stable funding that we can use to pay for equipment, to pay our researcher,

1:17.9

to work with Radiotopia to market the show and grow our audience and do fun collaborations.

1:23.2

Support from people like you is the Jenga piece that keeps this whole thing from crashing down.

1:28.3

And remember earlier when I mentioned checking in with your values?

1:32.3

Well, to me, independent, ambitious media, a collective of the best audio makers in the world,

1:38.3

gosh, that feels right in line with the kinds of values I want to express, and I suspect you do too, going into a new year.

1:46.3

So I know you're watching the calendar,

1:48.2

but there is still time.

1:49.4

You can do it right now.
