You may have heard these before, things like why you should never whistle in the woods,

why you should never respond to voices that call for you if you can't see the face they came from, no matter how familiar they are?

I received a story recently, a story called It Came from the Cave, from of the Ojibwe, who claims it is a true story,

and that there's something very hungry and very malevolent

stalking the woods of Minnesota, looking for meat every decade or so.

The Ojibwe have a word for it, but the sender of this story refused to state it here, out of fear.

The rules I mentioned before may have been what saved his grandfather and him from a horrible

and painful demise.

I grew up in a hunting family. My mother's side mostly. Her father, Emmett, was the one who taught me to shoot, to track, to clean a deer, and pack out the meat.
